This review will be short and sweet, because I don't want to spoil things for people who have not yet watched it. I will give a brief summary of the film, and give you my thoughts on it overall.
Batman ventures into Gotham City's underworld, where cryptic clues are left behind by the killer addressed to Batman. He is helped by a cop called James Gordan, who is one of the few cops that are not corrupt in Gotham City. As the killer leaves behind clues to what his plan is throughout the film, we slowly start to get an idea of what the killer's grand plan is. We see throughout that Gotham is City is corrupt and the powerful abuse there power. Batman is trying to get rid of the corruption and cleanse Gotham City's underworld. He teams up with a ally who comic book fans will know of.
This is a very different take to what we have seen on the big screen of Batman. Throughout we see batman trying to piece the puzzles together the killer has left behind. In the past Batman films, we have always seen him portrayed as a womanizer and pretty much superhuman. But this Batman seems vulnerable and we as the audience can relate to him more. In my opinion Robert Pattison's take on Batman is the best I have seen so far. We see the struggles batman goes through trying to protect Gotham, and he doesn't know if he is making a difference. The look of Gotham City looks absolutely stunning, and it feels dark which is perfect for this film. The film being three hours long may put some people off, but I think the film being so long has benefitted the story that was told. When I watched it, it did not feel like three hours, because the story kept me intrigued and the action scenes were epic. I like long films like this one because we get to know the characters better, and the director's can tell the story they want to tell without tight time constraints. This is why I liked the Snyder cut of the Justice League because we got to see what a masterpiece a film can be if it is given enough time to film, and it does not have to get cut down because it is too long.
I know this is not an in depth review, this is because I have only just watched it today. I need to watch it again in order for me to give a more thorough review. But on my first watch of The Batman, I would say it is powerful and the plot is gripping throughout. It is also quite funny at times, and it doesn't take its self too seriously.
Verdict - 8/10
The Batman is gritty, powerful and gripping throughout. If you love DC films or Batman in general, than you won't be disappointed in this three hour film of pure excellence. I highly recommend watching this even if you are a casual viewer of superhero fans, because it is a completely new direction of Batman that we have not seen on the big screen before.
