Knives Out is a rollercoaster of a ride with shocking twist and turns, which keep you guessing throughout. With a star studded cast including Chris Evans, Daniel Craig, Joseph Gordan Levitt, Jamie Lee Curtis and Katherine Langford, it was bound to be good. Knives out is of the mystery genre on which keeps the audience on edge and is also funny throughout.
We look at the circumstances of the death of Harlan Thrombey who was a crime novelist, which was supposedly a suicide. Detective Benoit Blanc who is a private investigator try's to uncover the truth of the incident. Blanc suspects that at least one of the family members were involved in the death, and makes them recount there whereabouts the days leading up and on the night of the death. We get a look at all the family members and we see how dysfunctional the family is, each having there own secrets. Throughout we hear the petty things the family fight about and the resentment some of them had towards Thrombey. As the film goes on we meet the nurse who was looking after Thrombey who's name is Marta. Thrombey has a liking to Marta and confides in her his secrets and the stress his family put's on him. For the majority of the film Marta thinks she has killed Thombey by accident by giving him too much morphine, therefore Thrombey was trying to protect Marta by killing himself so Marta could not be blamed for his death.
The film takes us on a rollercoaster of a ride and keeps us guessing throughout on who the suspect is. The audience thinks that it is Marta for the majority of the film, until right at the end when we find out who was behind it all, which was Ransom. Ransom was blackmailing Marta because Thrombey gave her everything he had in his will. Ransom wanted his share of the will, and almost got away with it. Detective Blanc figures this out in the end, and Ransom's final act is to try to kill Marta. But the knife is not real and he get's taken away.
The end of the film is Marta standing on the balcony looking down at the family and trying to decide if she should take over from Thrombey and look after the whole family. I suspect that she does because there is going to be a Knives Out 2, which should release this year at some point. I am excited about the sequel to this film because the first one took me by surprise. Usually when there is a cast as star studded as this one, most of the time it relies on the actors that were cast to make up for the plot. But this time the plot carried this film, not to say that the actors were not good. But the story was really well done, especially for one in the mystery genre.
Verdict - 8/10
This film is one of the few times that really got me guessing throughout. It is a perfect addition to the mystery genre. Not only does it have a star studded cast, the plot throughout is well paced. If you like films that have shocking twist and turns throughout, than you will love this film.
