The second season of Top Boy starts off with Jaime getting out of prison because of the video Dushane showed him at the end of season 1. This season Dushane wants to become legitimate by investing in the summerhouse redevelopment scheme that we saw towards the end of last season. As you can probably predict this does not go down well with his mum, who still lives in summerhouse. We also see Lizzie run into problems with her suppliers, and hence puts Dushane's plans in jeopardy of trying to get out of the drugs business. Throughout we see Dushane trying to juggle everything himself, and for the most part he does, until Jaq's sister is in trouble which causes him big problems that he has to sort out himself.
I thought this season was a lot better than the first one. This is because there is a lot more going on, and we get to see more than just London. What I have always liked about Top Boy is that it never glamourizes the reality of how ruthless this business is. We also get to see in more depth this season the effects the drug business has on the families, especially the children. I liked the settings we had this season in places like Spain and Morocco, which were stunning locations.
There were things I did not like about this season, especially the story line with Jaime. Jaime felt like a side character, and there was not much development with him throughout the season. I believe the season would have been stronger if we got to know Jaime more, because of the events that eventually plays out with him. I also find the dialogue a bit cringey. This is because the way some of these characters talk is stereotypical. And it kind of annoys me when the characters suck there teeth, which happens a lot. One character I did not really like this season is Stefan. This is because he was annoying throughout, and I could not really connect with him emotionally as a character.
Top Boy is one of them series that you can watch in a few sittings and not feel like it's a slog to get through. The ending left us wanting to see more, and I think there will be another season. But this depends on how well this does on Netflix, because we have had series that have been really good. But because the numbers were not what they were expecting, they got cancelled.
Verdict - 8/10
Top Boy season 2 has a lot going on, and it will keep you engaged throughout with the drama that plays out. If you love Top Boy then you won't be disappointed with this season, because it is the best one yet. Plus it takes us in a different direction which keeps the series fresh, and unpredictable.
