How I Met Your Father is a spin off from How I met Your Mother, and it is just as good as the original. I wasn't sure if I would like the spin off having really enjoyed the original, but I was surprised how much it felt new. It is a modern and inverted take on How I met Your Mother, and in my opinion funnier as well.
All of the actors in this show put on really good performances, and the characters have a lot of depth to them. The actor that stood out to me the most in this show was Hilary Duff who plays Sophie. Sophie is the main character, and I wasn't too sure that Hilary would fit the role, but she proved me wrong. She is funny throughout, and the character is complex. Sophie is the new Ted in this show, but they are pretty different personality wise. I did not really connect with Ted in the original, but I connected with Sophie more and became emotionally invested in her story. Another character that I instantly liked was Charlie who is played by Tom Ainsley. I think he is the funniest character, and he made the show a lot better with his humor. He is not just the funny guy, he has a lot more going on for himself which I think season 2 will explore more.
The setting of the show was the same as the original, and I liked that they did not change much. We also got to see the old bar as well, which brought back fond memories. There is a cameo in the show, but I did not enjoy it that much as most people might of. It's not that I don't like the character, it's just that the show relies on looking back to the past more than making the show it's own thing. Hopefully season 2 moves away from this and starts to come into it's own.
There is one thing I did not quite like, and that is the opening credits. I get that the producers wanted to make the audience feel nostalgic, but I feel that it would have been better to come up with a new song so it can be it's own thing. I do like the nostalgia, but sometimes the show did do too much. I know these are petty things to moan over, but I did want to give a balanced review of the show.
Verdict - 7/10
I really enjoyed How I Met Your Father, and I would say that it is a lot funnier than the original. The actors play there roles to perfection, and make the show fun to watch. I believe this will be the next big sitcom that will have a large audience watching for years to come. If you liked How I Met Your Mother, then you will definitely love this show.
