The first episode of the final season of Peaky Blinders aired last Sunday on BBC. The first episode starts off with Thomas Shelby attempting to shoot himself in the head, but this fails due to Arthur taking the bullets out of the gun before hand in the car. After this scene Thomas is in his office when he gets a phone call by the IRA, saying that it was them who prevented the assassination of Oswald Mosley. This was because they need Mosley for there plans in the future, and this is when Thomas realizes that he is not in control of the big decisions he makes. It is the IRA and other powerful people that are letting him get away with some things, but not others. We also get a emotional send off for Helen McCrory who played Polly Gray , who sadly passed away in April last year. After this we fast forward four years, and we see that Thomas wants to expand his empire to Boston. The only way to make that happen is through Micheal's wife's father. Gina's father is a powerful person in America and his turf seems to be Boston. After Gina tells Thomas that her father won't let him expand in Boston he gives her a ultimatum. He manages to plant drugs in Micheal's brief case and get's him arrested. He tells her that either Micheal being in jail will get released to the press, or that her father let's him expand his empire into Boston.
Overall the episode was pretty good, and we got some idea of who the big players will be in this final season. One of the big players that I think will play the most important part this season is Gina. This is because she is the middle man for Thomas, and she has some influence with her father. The episode was better than I expected because there is a lot of moving parts and I can't wait for it all to unfold.
Verdict - 8/10
The episode is what you would expect from a Peaky Blinders episode, but it felt like more was at stake. If your hesitant to watch the final season, which I don't think you are if you have watched the rest of the series. But if you are thinking is it worth watching then watch the first episode, and you will see just how high the stakes are for the final season.
