Peaky Blinders S6 EP3 Review

This latest episode of Peaky Blinders was probably my least favorite one so far. But there were some powerful scenes that really pulled on the heart strings. In this episode we focus on Thomas Shelby's daughter Ruby, who has a disease called consumption, which is tuberculosis. Throughout the episode we follow Thomas who is looking for the person who has put the curse on his daughter. We also get a meeting between Oswald Mosely and Nelson, which Thomas set up for them. Because Thomas is looking to cure his daughter, he asks Ada to come to the meeting instead. As we follow Thomas we see that he meets Esme in the mountains to find out if she knows anything about the supposed curse. Esme does not, but she thinks she knows who might of done it. We do find out at the end of the episode who did it, but I will talk more about this towards the end.

Isiah and Arthur go to Liverpool because people have been stealing opium they have stored there. This is when we meet the special guest of the episode who is Hayden Stagg played by Stephen Graham. Arthur meets Stagg so he can get his beating for instigating the stealing of the opium. But this does not happen because Stagg voices the inner demons that are in Arthur's head and tells him he can change. Stagg really gets through to Arthur when no one else could, so Arthur calls off the beating. This is my favorite scene of the episode because it was touching to see Arthur relate to someone who has gone through the exact same things as he has.

Towards the end of the episode we see that Esme takes Thomas to a grave of a 7 year old girl. The sapphire that killed Grace in season three plays a big role in this episode. In season three Thomas takes the Sapphire to Madame Barwell because he believes that the jewel is cursed. Madame Barwell tells him that it is not cursed and Thomas does not think much of it after. Esme tells Thomas that Madame Barwell gave the sapphire to her sister, who gifted it to her daughter. Shortly after the girl puts the jewel on she falls ill and dies at the age of seven. The girl seems to die of tuberculosis because Esme says "Navadni put the stone around the neck of her daughter and straight away the girl began to cough. She died that night, seven years old". Therefore the grieving mother put a curse on him to make him go through what she had to with her daughter. Earlier on in the episode we find out that Ruby's tuberculosis is spreading quickly, and at the end of the episode we hear that she sadly passed away. Leaving Thomas shocked and Lizzie broken.

For the majority of the episode there was not much going on, but at the end it suddenly turned very dark and grim. Overall the episode was good, but as I said at the start compared to the last couple of episodes this one was my least favorite so far. I am excited to see how Thomas Shelby reacts to this, and see if this is the final straw for him and if he breaks down completely.

Verdict 7-10

There was not much going on throughout the episode, except right at the end. But the ending did make me curious to see if Thomas recovers from this, and if he will hunt down the women that he thinks put a curse on his daughter. I expect the next episode will focus more on Nelson and Oswald Mosely, and what there relationship will entail.
