Moon Knight is about a man called Steven Grant and a mercenary called Marc Specter, and they investigate the mysteries of the Egyptian gods. But they are the same person, because he has two personalities which can take over one another at anytime.
We first see Steven wake up with ankle restraints on himself, and as we see later this is so he does not wander off anywhere. Steven has a voice in his head telling him to let Marc take over when he is getting attacked, and this makes Steven confused because he has no idea what is going on. Steven as a character is very strange because he is always in a state of confusion. For the first episode we only get to see the perspective of Steven, and for someone who may be watching this having no idea of the character Moon Knight it will be very confusing and frustrating for them.
We get introduced to the villain of the show called Arthur Harrow, who seems to be a kind of cult leader. We see a tattoo on his forearm of scales, which moves up and down while weighing to see if a person is good or not. And as we see on our first encounter with him if the scales don't go your way, the life will be sucked out of you.
As we see throughout the episode Steven's different personalities take over, and this is where his mind blanks out, and when he finally snaps back to himself he has done something he cannot remember. We see this numerous times throughout this episode when his life is in danger. His mercenary side Marc takes over, but unfortunately we do not see the action that takes place. This is what I don't like about this first episode. For a viewer who might watch this without any prior knowledge of the character, the viewer will feel lost. And because it is a Marvel series they will be expecting action which we do not get much of unfortunately.
We see at the end that Steven and Marc have different accents. Steven has a British accent and Marc has a American one. I find this odd, but it's not something that bothers me much. Steven finally lets Marc take control to save him from the monster that his trying to get him. And this is when we finally get our first look at Moon Knight in the show. And all I can say about the costume is that it looks absolutely stunning.
Overall the episode was slow, and I think it lacked action to keep a casual viewer of Marvel engaged throughout. But the performance from Oscar Isaac was brilliant and in my opinion he carried this first episode. I believe that in the next episode we will see a lot more action, and some details into what is going on. This show has took a completely different direction we are not used to seeing from Marvel, and I love the creepy vibe it has.
Verdict - 7/10
It was not the best first episode to start off the show, especially if they want to entice the casual Marvel fans. There was not enough action for me, but the plot kept me engaged enough for me to not get bored .The episode had creepy elements to it, which I liked. I am excited though to see what will happen next, and where this will all lead to in this six episode event.
