After life is funny, heartwarming, emotional and pulls at the heartstrings. Season 3 is the final season for the show. It is 6 episodes and each episode is just under 30 minutes long, except the last episode which was 35 minutes long. The format is similar to the last 2 seasons. Each episode is funny, and at other times emotional.
This final season of After Life has been the most emotional out of the past seasons, especially the last episode. The characters that really stood out for me this season was Kath. We really got to see just how lonely she is. We see her go on dates with guys who are complete jerks, and how they make her feel uncomfortable. We also see that she feels like she needs to lie about her job to impress people. At one point in the season we see Kath breakdown which is heartbreaking, but Tony is there to pick her up when he senses she is not okay. This is where we see the compassionate side of Tony. When he sees someone who needs picking up, he is always there for them and listens to there troubles, and tries to help them out. We don't just see it with Kath, but we see the interactions with Ann as well on the bench in the graveyard. But Ann also helps Tony and can sense when he is not alright. Ann always seems to say the right things to pick him back up and keep him appreciating the little things in life. Another character that stands out is Brian. We don't just see Brain as a weirdo and a loser, but we see how broken he is because of life. He doesn't have any confidence, but when he does get a little spurt of it, someone is there to always put him down. In the last episode when we see him at his happiest, we see two idiots embarrass him in front of everyone and he gives a heart wrenching dialogue about when he thinks he's fallen to his lowest, there's always lower depths he can fall.
One of the notable characters that are missing this season is Daphne, the prostitute and the postman's girlfriend. We get mentions of her almost every episode by the postman, but she never features in the episodes. Daphne was a fan favorite from season 2 and without her the season feels like it's missing something. The other notable character that is missing is Sandy who worked with Tony. It seems like they swapped her with Coleen, who I think is not a good alternative. Coleen is bland as a character, which I think she is suppose to be. But she doesn't bring anything to the cast we have, and we could of done without her without altering the story at all.
The music in season 3 complements the scenes in each episode perfectly. When there is an emotional scene, the music just emphasizes it which is what you want to get the viewer more engaged and sympathetic to the characters. The music does this perfectly.
The last episode really brings everything together nicely and a worthy ending for Tony. This episode we see him change and have a reason to live, not for himself, but for someone else. I don't want to spoil the last episode, but all I would say is that it brought tears to my eyes. Nothing has made me feel something for a TV show for a long time like this.
Verdict - 8/10
This is the best season out of all of them, it really pulled all of the heartstrings. If you like laughing one minute and emotional the next, it pulls this off perfectly. You can watch the whole season in one sitting and come out thinking differently about yourself and others.
